The first photos of Ximena, our new unborn baby

These were the first pictures taken of Ximena. She is programmed to be born in late June or early July of this year. You can see her almost as a little fish. In the lowest image the heart was visible in the live ecography.

Hola Quetzalli

Quetzalli walks all over the place.

Quetzalli never stops to walk. She likes to walk all over the place. I placed some foam mats in order for her to have a soft spot where to fall, just in case. But she walks out of the foam mats, and goes to the kitchen, to the restroom, to the bedroom. We have to be behind her in order to see where she is going. I think Quetzalli loves to explore. She goes around the house looking for new stuff to grasp and see. Sometimes I would open the "secret room", where I keep all my tools, my bike, cameras, and other things I would never like to see Quetzalli grabbing. And Quetzalli will ran towards the room. I have to quickly get what I needed, and get out immediately. Sometimes Quetzalli is faster than me! And before I notice, she would be entering all excited into the secret room.
.
I think she also has a fascination for the forbidden. Just as in the case of the secret room, where I keep the dangerous or fragile things. Quetzalli is attracted to things we don't let her have. And sometimes she cries, but other times she creates a better plan. So you never know with a playful toddler like Quetzalli.
.
We are also starting to take Quetzalli to the park to walk on the grass. She likes it, as expected. But most of all, she likes to run towards other children's toys. Whenever Quetzalli sees a bouncing ball or a flashy toy, she runs towards it, demanding it. Mommy and me laugh about it, but I think that Quetzalli needs to understand that not all toys in the world are hers.
.
The trycicle adventure
.
One time we were at the park. We were the three of us walking in a comfortable afternoon of January. When all of the sudden Quetzalli runs towards a trycicle. The little girl was with her mom in the trycicle. So Quetzalli approached the little girls and started babbling to her. The girl just stepped out of the trycicle, and let menacing Quetzalli to touch the buttons it had. Quetzalli was playing like if the trycicle was hers. She did not attended to our calls, she was totally focused with the trycicle and the electronic buttons. The little girls looked everything for a foot away from Quetzalli. Both mothers began chatting, while I went away for a bit. Then the little girl wanted to show Quetzalli how a button would sound when pushed. The girl approached the trycicle, and pushed the button for Quetzalli to see. All of the sudden Quetzalli scolded her, yelling like a wounded goose. She makes that goose sound when she gets angry. The goose sound was so loud and surprising that the little girl jumped to her mother's arms crying in terror. Quetzalli was all angry protecting the trycicle. So mommy got angry with the action, and immediately took Quetzalli out of the scene. Quetzalli cried.
.
Mommy and me were laughing because what would Quetzalli expected us to do? "Here Quetzalli, take this little girl's trycicle". Or should we say to the mother "Take your daughter away, my daughter is going to play with your daughter's toy". We were laughing, because this is so typical of Quetzalli.

Quetzalli discovers Astronomy!

My beautiful daughter, Quetzalli, began to discover Astronomy this last week. It all began with the total lunar eclipse last Thursday night, February 21, 2008. Mommy and me pointed Quetzalli where the Moon was. At first, she ignored the moon, as usual. Ever since she was born, she had been ignoring all things celestial. The moon, the clouds, the stars; they were of no importance to Quetzalli.

But we kept pointing towards the eclipsing Moon just outside of Long John Silver’s. After dinning, we went out to see how the lunar eclipse was going. And again, I pointed towards the Moon. She started to stare at it, and turned down to Earth. Quetzalli noticed we had our eyes fixated at the Moon, so she turned her little head up, and pointed the Moon.

Since that eclipse night, she’s been looking and pointing at the Moon. If we are at the car on the freeway, and the moon pops-up, she’ll start babbling all excited towards the Moon. Mommy explains to Quetzalli that it is the Moon. Quetzalli gets all hyper over the moon, and starts to force us to see the Moon as well.

Yesterday, the Moon was late to appear on the night sky. Quetzalli was looking for the Moon all over the sky. She asks us where the Moon is. She points as if the Moons will pop out of a cosmic hide-out. No Moon. So mommy offered Quetzalli a repertoire of small but never-failing stars. Quetzalli stared at Orion and neighboring constellations. For a moment she seemed to not be convinced. But she keeps looking at the stars, and finally she points them all excited.

Quetzalli has learned many new things about this world, or should I say, from out of this world. She not only discovered the Moon. But also, Quetzalli found that whenever there is no Moon, you will have stars to see.

Quetzalli playing with the printer ports

Sometimes I stay late night doing work or projects in the computer. Very late. Eventually Quetzalli and her mommy come and visit me at the computer. But Quetzalli only comes with the purpose of playing. Sometimes she plays with a plastic moon, basically a rubber ball with craters brought from NASA. Quetzalli likes to bounce the moon ball towards me. It is fun to play with her. And she likes it.

But sometimes Quetzalli comes with the intention to make disorder. She grabs everything that is at her reach. Anything! This can be very frustrating sometimes, because toddlers are very eager to grab and discover things hands-on. Quetzalli is likewise a grabber. She grabs, and then bites, everything. Here, in this funny video, Quetzalli is playing with the printer ports. Old ports by the way. She likes to play, like in this case, by giving things she grabs to her mommy or to me. Here you can see Quetzalli taking the printer ports with her little hands, and then handing them to her mommy. This is funny, she does this all the time. Sometimes she is eating, and she would graciously offer us some of her food.

This night was a chilly night because of an early cold front. So they were with me in the computer. And then Quetzalli started playing by giving the ports to her mommy. Everytime Quetzalli gives us anything, we say to her "gracias".

Your first birthday!!

Quetzalli, today is your first birthday. Today is the day in which you reached one year of life in this world. It went so fast, that it is still incredible that you are now one year old.

One year ago, your mommy and you went to face destiny. It was the time in which both of you, joined by the eternal link of mother and offspring, fought for life and survival. The ancients talked about a cosmic battle, the birth of a child. The Toltecs said that the mother, victorious over adversity, would get to keep the captive. In this case, the baby. If the mother failed, death would have taken her baby as captive. It is a natural and constant battle, necessary to make the stark distinction between survival and dismay, between life and death. Otherwise, there would be no division between life and death, and hence existance would cease to exist blurred by such universal inconsistencies.

Therefore we need those contrasts in life, Quetzalli. There has to be evil in order for goodness and kindness to exist. There has to be cruelty in order for love and care to be in our reach. You are a survivor, Quetzalli! Premature, against all odds, and you still courageously resisted to have a chance for life in this world.

Your mommy and me love you so much Quetzalli. Sometimes we think we want to give you the entire world to your feet. Our love for you is so grand, that it may even survive time and death. Please remember, Quetzalli, that I will always be inhabit in your heart. During the time we will have together here on Earth, I will do my best to help you, protect you, cherish you, and love you. And even if time does not permit us to be long enough, be assure, my dear girl, that I will always look up for you. That is my promise to you. That even when I go, to live amongst the bright stars of the eternal night, I will be your beacon. I will be always for you, at least, to love you. You are my reason to exist right now, and it will be the reason for conscious and love to survive time into the mists of eternity to always be with you.

I love you so much Quetzalli! Please, remember me in every birthday you have in your life. Remember your mom too. We merged our love to create you. Not chance nor casuality was the reason of your existance, but true love emerged from the deepest of our souls. Always remember our love for you in future birthdays. I love you Quetzalli, and wish for you many more birthdays! Let life be kind and wise with you! Let death spare you time and health!

You can sit by your own.

Hello baby Quetzalli,

Yesterday, Monday April 23, 2007, at around 12:05 am you sat by yourself on the bed. You mommy was playing with you, and she kept you sitting. But when she turned to get something, she noticed that you were sitting all by your own! Usually, when you were left alone sitting in the bed or somewhere flat, you would eventually fall to one side. But this time you kept your back straight, sustaining yourself. What was funny was that you didn't noticed, because you were playing with your toys. At some point, you dropped one toy to grab another one near you. But you did not fall at all. It was great. You mommy and me are so excited about it.

Of course, after a long time being sitting sustaining yourself, you obviously fell to one side. But it's a beginning. You're seven and a half months old, and you're beginning to show a lot of stuff that you couldn't manage to do. Especially with moving hands, arms, legs, and even your head.

Sometimes you are liying in bed, and then you move your head as if you wanted to get up. This happens when you want to see television, or when you are just tired of playing in the bed.

When we go to restaurants, they offer us a small chair for you. But we always tell them that you are still too young to sustain yourself in a sitting position. Maybe this is about to change.

Also, your mommy has reported that you are beginning to eat more. Apparently you are eating almost half of a small glass Gerber-recipient a day. We need to buy you more food.
